I have the same problem with my Permedia 2 board, which says it's VESA 2.0
compatible, but
actually doesn't really support it well. It messes up the palette.
The solution to your problem indeed lies in the use of a good vesa 2 driver
(Scitech Display Doctor: www.scitechsoft.com). Another thing you can try, if
you just need 8-bit colour, is use set_gfx_mode(GFX_VESA1, 640, 480, 0, 0);
