`lid' supports regular expressions.  You could use a suitable regular
expression, like [^a-zA-Z0-9_][a-zA-Z0-9_]+[^a-zA-Z0-9_] to limit the
search to identifiers.

Which etags (from what Emacs version) did you use, and in what ways is
Exuberant-Tags superior to it?
