Subject: ANNOUNCE: TeX/Web2c v7.2b ported and uploaded
MIME-Version: 1.0
Reply-To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com

This is to announce that a DJGPP port of TeX, Web2c and related
programs was uploaded to SimTel.NET and should be available from its
mirrors world-wide. The main mirror is at this URL:

  ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/gnu/djgpp/v2apps/tex/TeX.README

For those who don't know: TeX is a package originally written by
Donald Knuth. TeX allows typesetting and printing documents; its
primary use in the DJGPP context is to print the Texinfo documentation
of GNU and DJGPP packages, but it can also be used for other similar
jobs. In particular, many scientific journals require that articles
be submitted in various dialects of TeX. See the file README in the
distribution for more details.

This release includes programs that were ported with the previous
release, and many packages for which this is the first (AFAIK) DJGPP
port. In addition, beginning with version 7.2 of TeX/Web2c release,
building with DJGPP is supported in the official source distributions
of all these packages.

The old versions are still available for a limited time, from the
v2apps/tex/old directory on SimTel.NET, in case I blew it big time
with this new port.

Here are the parts of this package that were ported with the previous
release:

tmflib74.zip -- the minimal TeX and Metafont library
      webc72b.zip -- Web2c, TeX and related programs
      kpse32b.zip -- Kpathsea path-search library
dvlj26b.zip -- DVI drivers for LaserJet printers
dvps578b.zip -- DVI driver for PostScript printers
dvga09b.zip -- DVI previewer for VGA adapters
dvdj09b.zip -- DVI drivers for DeskJet printers

With the exception of dvivga and dvidj, all the other ports are from
newer versions of the Unix sources. See the file NEWS in every
distribution (if available) for the new features and improvements
since previous releases.

And here are the packages that are new to this port:

dtl060b.zip -- DTL package for editing DVI files
      dvdv11b.zip -- Dvidvi, selects/rearranges DVI files
gspk116b.zip -- Gsf2PK, creates PK fonts from GS fonts
lchk126b.zip -- Lacheck, LaTeX document checker
      midx213b.zip -- MakeIndex, TeX/Troff index generator
      mflx083b.zip -- MusixFlx, line-breaking for MusixTeX
odps578b.zip -- ODviPS, DviPS with Omega extensions
      pspk15b.zip -- Ps2Pk, creates PK fonts from PS type1
seet31b.zip -- SeeTeX package, manipulates DVI files
t4ht-a8b.zip -- TeX4HT, generates HTML from TeX input

Apart of new programs, this version also includes various improvements
and bug-fixes, some of them specific to DJGPP. In particular, support
for LFN platforms is now more stable and reliable.

Please download and read the file TeX.README (the URL is above)
*before* you download the rest. That file includes crucial
information which will allow you to decide which packages of this huge
distribution will you need to download, and also provide important
clues about painless installation of the programs.

Please note that installing this package requires to uninstall the old
version, if you have it installed, including some editing of your
DJGPP.ENV file.

Finally, please post any further correspondence related to this port
to the comp.os.msdos.djgpp newsgroup or to its email gateway
<djgpp AT delorie DOT com>; do NOT use djgpp-announce list for that.

Happy TeX'ing!
