Please don't try to justify a weak position by using an invalid
analogy.  The format of mail and news messages has nothing to do with
cars or technology.  Mail and news use plain old text as their content
format, regardless of what anyone thinks, because that's what the
standard says they should use.  MIME should be limited to the need to
attach files to messages, but even then you shouldn't do that in
mailing lists or news groups - put them on ftp or http somewhere and
just post the url; you don't really need to send it to thousands of
people.  If you need to include a code snippet, just paste it into
your message so that everyone can read it.

In any case, HTML is not an appropriate content type for mail and news
messages, even if you happen to have a client that can view them.
Most people can't, and many don't want to anyway.
