Using a linear frame buffer is always going to be the fastest, but as
you stated being in a banked mode makes things a little more difficult.
With VESA 2.0 you get access to a Protected Mode structure which gives
you access to a direct bank switching function so that you no longer
have to switch to realmode every flip.  The code for that is in my VESA
tutorial on my site.
