The last chapter of the book "Numerical Recipes in C" deals with arithmetic
at arbitary precision. The authors give C-code to carry out arithmetic
operations on numbers base 255, represented as character strings. They also
present an example program to return pi to arbitary precision (thousands of
decimal digits). I have just compiled this using DJGPP/RHIDE and it seems
to work well.

There is an on-line version of "Numerical Recipes" at http://www.nr.com
