This seems to be from the old version of the FAQ.  Please download the 
latest version 2.11 (v2/faq211b.zip) and try the code from there.  
Previous versions of the FAQ had a bug in that example.

PS.  Are you really using DJGPP v1.x?  If so, some of the code in that 
example might not work.  Why don't you upgrade to v2.01?  V1.x is not 
supported anymore.
