I tried compiling a simple "Hello world" program using cout and gcc gave
me undefined references to both "cout" and "ostream:operator<<(char
const *)".

I'm pretty sure gcc is able to get iostream.h right, because I've
successfully compiled a program that did nothing but include iostream.h.

Does anybody know what's wrong with this cout?
