It's great.

So what? I'm sure there are a lot of people that don't know anything about
graphics programming, or sound programming and such stuff, and still may have
good ideas for games. So the choice is to either learn everything by yourself
and do it yourself and when you are finished you don't know or don't care
anymore what you originally wanted to write, or you use a great library that
does exactly what you need and you concentrate on the things that are
important to YOU.

I found a library for GUI programming that supports an easy interface for
Windows and X. Prior to this I spent more time with fighting with MS idiotic
stuff and API programming then I usually spend to write my applications. And
then I don't even have the benefit of X support. Now its vice versa. I spend a
minimum amount of time withe the GUI and can program the things I'm really
interested in. The same goes for allegro. I'm planning a game with a friend
and I'm sure I don't want to spend the next year by learning how to program MY
gfx card, let alone all the other cards that are out there. And then the same
starts for the sound as well. It's pretty obvious IMO what advantages such a
thing has.
