Try GNU Less (v2gnu/lss332b.zip from SimTel.NET).  IMHO, it blows LIST 
right out of the water.  If you don't believe me, press ! and get a 
full-blown command-line interpreter with file-name completion.  If you 
are hooked, read the docs, as Less has a few more neat tricks up its 
sleeve.

Emacs has a `view-mode' whereby you cannot change the buffer contents.  
Type `M-x view-file RET filename RET'.
