Has anybody ever had to use "--force" to get a good info file?

Trying to convert a particular .tex file to an info file with
"makeinfo calc.tex" did not work. It went through the long process of
converting every segment with
no error messages, but at the end there was the blinking cursor forever--I
had to reboot.

So I tried "makeinfo --force calc.tex" and IT WORKED!!. The info (a big
one) worked just fine when
I installed it and edited the dir file.

Is there any command I can do that will tell me just what hung up the
computer--an extension or
something? This is the first time I have tried the "--force" extension. It
looks like a valuable trick.

Any idea at all would be appreciated.

Ralph
