In that case, I apologise for wasting your time.

Now, for anyone else who is interested in the reliability of the memory
interrogation functions, an examination of the source shows that:

__go32_dpmi_remaining_physical_memory()

returns available_physical_pages*4096, if it is nonzero, otherwise it
will return the total available memory in bytes.

However, under certain DPMI servers this will return -1 if it is not
supported, so it will still fail under these servers.
