I would recommend getting a good book on X.  There are lots and lots of
them available; go to your local technical bookstore and look in the
Unix area for one that's to your liking.

uivalent for function pointers, you must
cast a function pointer back to the original type like the example
does.  In the example, you cannot simply call func directly since the
two functions have different parameters and different return types.
