As I understand, you have downloaded SWORD 2.1. It has some
bugs/misfeatures. I suggest you to download newer SWORD 2.50 (or SWORD
3.0beta04 but it doesn't support graphics gadgets under DJGPP yet).
SWORD 2.50 much more stable and improved version which uses standard
DJGPP installation and works well.

You can point this variable to standard GRX fonts directory such as
%DJDIR%/contrib/grx/fonts

SWORD is a set of C++ classes, so you should use C++ with SWORD :-).
There is another windowing library called MGUI which is written on C
and has C++ API wrapping. MGUI has no free sources. (Try to search in
archives for Morello MGUI to find its URL).
