When you say "freezes up," do you mean that absolutely nothing happens
at all? Does the hard drive seem to be running a lot during
compilation? Can you break out of it with Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Break, or does
it require that you close the window manually?

Please try typing "gcc -v file.c -o file.exe" and see if that locks up
as well. If it displays any messages, you can capture them with the
command line "redir -o gcc.log -eo gcc -v file.c -o file.exe"; the file
'gcc.log' will contain the messages which you should post on this
newsgroup. It would also help to know what type of computer you have
(brand, model, CPU, speed) and how much RAM. Also please try typing
"go32-v2" at your DOS prompt and report what it says.

If go32-v2 indicates that you have low amounts of memory available (less
than 16 MB total physical + virtual), you may want to try increasing the
DPMI memory available to DOS programs by editing the MS-DOS Prompt
properties sheet. In the Memory tab, increase DPMI Memory to 65535 KB
by typing in the value manually.

If none of this seems to help, please read chapter 6 of the DJGPP
Frequently Asked Questions list and post a complete system report as
described in chapter 6.12. I have written a utility called DJVERIFY
which can assist you in this task as well as in performing diagnostics;
if you're interested in trying it visit my web page (URL below).

Good luck!
