I actually didn't try "REN", but a "MOVE" is refused by DOS, so DOS
itself
does recognize UNCs.

I do think it is important in the long run, but I also believe that 
this requires a major rewrite of lots of file name handling code. 
I don't see any way to support drive letters _and_ UNCs in a foolproof 
way. One way would be to map something like "C:/AUTOEXEC.BAT" into
"\\localhost\c:\autoexec.bat", and drop drive letters for remote hosts 
completely, i.e. "i:\demmer\plan" becomes 
"\\brain1/usr/home/demmer/plan". 
Hence, if a UNC starts with "\\localhost" it is a local filesystem, 
and DOS interrupts apply, otherwise it is on a remote FS. 

But this requires tons of code to get rewritten.
