I don't know what the problem with this could be, apart from obvious
things like not having that datafile in the current directory when you
run it. I'm afraid that you are on your own from this point on: I have
nothing further to suggest.
I presume that the Allegro examples do work correctly on your machine?
If so, maybe you could take something like the ex12.c and gradually
modify that, going in very small steps until you turn it into the same
thing as your program, thus finding out exactly which change makes
your problem reappear...
