Did you see BASH_COLORS described in any Bash-related docs?

AFAIK, it doesn't support this variable.  The syntax you used resembles 
the INFO_COLORS variable, but that was specifically added to the DJGPP 
port of the Info reader.  It is not a feature common to GNU programs.

One way of getting what you want is to install ANSI.SYS and define the 
Bash prompt so that it send ANSI escape sequences which set colors.
