I kinda expected that, since the other system has a very simple setup, 
without all these complications.

So it seems like nothing short of debugging session will get the 
answser.  Please try to run Bash under a debugger and see if the problem 
persists there.  If not, you will need to fall back to `printf' 
debugging.  Anyhow, please try to find the part of Bash code where it 
hangs and tell the details here.
