That would mean that your system is *grossly* misconfigured.  Allegro 
takes about 8 minutes on a P166, so it should be about 25 minutes on 
i486.  Check your system configuration (disk cache, RAM drive, etc.).

That error message is only printed when virtual memory is exhausted.
