This means it hangs in some DOS call, possibly when invoking `diff'.

What does the DOS box show in its caption bar when Emacs hangs?  When
Emacs runs external program, the name of that program should be
displayed on the caption bar.  Please tell me what do you see there.

Also, please tell the size and time stamp of diff.exe, and the names
of the files you typed at the Ediff prompts (the files you wanted to
compare).

And please make sure that the directory pointed to by the TMPDIR
environment variable exists and has enough free space.
