IMHO, running raw COFF files routinely is a Bad Idea (tm).

Invoking the COFF executables directly requires the help of
`go32-v2.exe' which loads and runs them in a manner which is similar
to what DJGPP debuggers do.  This method was never meant to be good
enough for mainstream work.  In particular, it might have some subtle
problems in programs which hook hardware interrupts, and when
redirecting standard streams.

Running the .exe executables is much safer and much more tested.  For
that matter, editing your lib/specs to achieve this is also not
recommended.

If I were you, I would reconsider.  The disk space savings are
minimal, and I see no other good reason to do that.
