Not true! Until quite recently this was indeed the case (Creative 
Labs refused to disclose any information despite extended pleading 
from various developers, which put them right at the top of many 
peoples hate lists :-) but some quite detailed specs for the EMU8000 
are now available from their website.

To the original poster:

George Foot wrote a native AWE32 music driver for Allegro, so if
you just want to play MIDI files you can simply use that. If you
are wanting to do something more specialised, it may be useful to
look at the Allegro 3.0 files emu8k.c, emu8k.h, and emu8kmid.c, or 
ask George for specific advice (george DOT foot AT merton DOT ox DOT ac DOT uk). He 
is a very nice guy, so I'm sure he will be happy to help you out :-)
