Wouldn't it be easier, and not discernably slower, to put

int nextthink;

nextthink=THINKER_RUN;
nextthink=THINKER_ATTACK;

switch nextthink
{
  case THINKER_RUN:
    run();

  case THINKER_ATTACK:
    attack();
}
