Not only can you use midi, but there is a lesser known format commonly called
MOD. (short for amiga module) This format is completely software based- it
sends the finished sound stream to the sound card. There are NUMEROUS free
"trackers" (compositional software programs) and the advantages of this format
is that you can supply your own samples, you don't need a hella expensive
sound card, and it will sound exactly the same on any computer. It does take
up additional cpu cycles, but for a 4-channel mod look at about 1.something %
cpu power taken up on a 486 100. Not really much of a problem. For trackers
