True pipes are impossible in a DOS box, but DJGPP supports the popen()
call anyway: Pipes work the same way as they have always done under MSDOS
(i.e. by using intermediate files). This limits the piping to one
direction, but is relatively useful anyway.

Your other problem (the stopping of the program when iconified) is simply
an effect of bad default settings in your DOS box. In the "-" menu, i.e.
the menu called up by clicking the "-" field in the upper left of your DOS
box window (or by pressing alt+space), there is an option called
"settings" or something similar. Under that option, you can mark whether
your program should continue to run when not in the foreground. Windows
3.1, however (or Windows 95, for that sake) are not perfect multitaskers,
so dont expect miraculously smooth operation---if this is of paramount
importance to you, switch to OS/2 or Linux!
