I suggest trying with CWSDPMI r4, the latest.

Another thing to try is to run ar from Windows and install one of the 
available programs which watch memory usage.  Then you could tell whether 
it indeed uses up all memory or just lies to you.

Is that `ar' from the latest Binutils (2.8.1), btw?
