Being rich in quick hacks and poor in real knowledge, I actually tried
this before posting my question.   :-)  I didn't work.  I think I need
to do some reading about autoconfig and m4 in order to try to find out
what is going on.  The part of the configur script that is looking for 
ld seems to start out in aclocal.m4.

Tried it.  Same results.


Eli - I'll send you the parts of configur that are checking for LD as a 
separate message.

Well, it seems like a long shot, but if I ever make this thing work, it
will be with a minimum of new clutter to the file system, as Eli suggests.
