I had a chat with John W. Eaton about this some months ago. 
His views are that the effort to doing it was not worth of it.

On the technical side, it would be necessary to make all the filenames 8.3
"clean" to be able to compile in a plain MS-DOS machine. And this is the
first step...

Here, the energy to do this port was directed to other chores after the
John's e-mail (I was a losing vote...!).
