Hi !
i used both dos+djgpp and linux+gcc for number-crunching. as long as no other 
time consuming programs were running, linux+gcc was always faster (10 to 20 % 
with my programs). for number crunching purposes you should try pgcc, the 
pentium-optimizing version of gcc which is still in development, but was 
sufficientliy bug-free for my purposes by last march. snapshots of pgcc 
are available for djgpp and linux-gcc (among others)
