This problem is well known to me (I got it also). And it is definitely
a GNU bug but I don't know exact now, if it is fixed in 2.8.1 but
as far as I remember it should be fixed (or at least it crashes not so
often).

I cannot say where exactly the bug is (in binutils or in gcc) because
at least gcc has a bug (which I have posted to the g++ bug list) which
produces wrong stabs under special situations.
