I don't think you can easily deduce what does "Auto" mean, and I'm not
aware of any piece of Microsoft documentation which clarifies this.

For example, on my machine, I get 64MB with "Auto", but I suspect that
this is because two other DOS boxes were running at the time I tested
that, each one of them asking for 64MB.  It might be that 16MB is
given by "Auto" if no other DOS box asks for more.

Either way, leaving that setting at "Auto" means you are at Windows'
mercy.
