I would like to suggest the computer modern roman fonts that come in
packed (.pk####) format. The format and the packing algorithm are simple
and I would be happy to give you c functions that I am writing for my dvi
viewer. Of course I have not used the Allegro fonts so I do not
understand very well the issues involved. But if you are looking for
proportional bitmapped fonts that come packed, cmr are one of the best.

Thanks
