regarding this thread, there was some time ago a similar talk in the demoscene:
the demOS project. it would be a 32-bit OS (though not DOS), designed to give
complete hardware acesss, soundcard drivers, video drivers and a command line
interface, all to run demos at the fastest possible speed.

it wasn't released (i guess it wasn't even started), mainly because someone
realised that noone would install a new OS just to view/code demos.

a 32bit dos would be cool to have, but I guess it isn't the only choice.. why
re-invent the wheel one more time, with something as critical as a OS? why not
stick with an existing 32-bit OS? for those who do not like Win95/NT, there are
more 32bit OSs. I use OS/2 Warp and I love it.. I do all my DJGPP programming
under it.. I only wish it had dos long filename support on HPFS partitions, where I
have DJGPP installed... but this is a limitation of OS/2, not DJGPP fault...
coming to think of it, should be easy for someone to enable LFN support in HPFS
 drives... volunteers? :)
