This statement contradicts my own experience with IRIX compilers (on 5.2 IDO,
which is fairly old by happens to be my favorite. It is not really different
from 5.3 IDO as far as C and Fortran are concerned, which is all I need) and 
gcc.

The IDO compilers would usually produce faster code (not dramatically faster,
though - may be 20% or so) for *me*. However, if you just slam -O2 on the
IDO compiler, you won't get the fastest possible code...

In all respect, may be you are just not quite as experienced with SGI IRIX 
compilers as you are with gcc?
