Examine the DJGPP Frequently Asked Questions list; in particular,
chapters 10, 17, and 18.  DMA can be done with DJGPP but requires
different techniques from what you are used to in real-mode compilers. 
Also examine the libraries that other users have mentioned (Allegro and
MikMod).
