Your best bet, if you seriously need this sort of precision in malloc(),
is to either write one yourself for your specific needs, or adapt an
alternative memory management routine to run alongside malloc().  The
MUD server that I am working on, for example, has a complete set of
overlay routines for memory management, ones that attempt to minimize
the wastage of allocating multiple small blocks of memory.  I can give
you a URL for the source, or send you the appropriate code snippets if
you want.  It isn't hard, really, but does get complicated from time to
time, and a lot depends on what exactly you are using the memory for.
