the function abort() (which if you are compiling, would have to be
called by pgcc,as,cc1,ccplus,ld, etc.)

or maybe a define like: #error Abort! (somewhere in the sources)

Have you changed anything in the machine's configuration?  You might
have uncovered an error, or you might have introduced an 
incompatibility that wasn't there before.

I'd check the sources first though.
