Many thanks to those who reponded, both publically and privately to
my query.  Allegro was mentioned more than once for its good
handling of DMA.  I'll be checking it out shortly.  For those who
want to read about it in general, I found two references at the
National Instruments web site, application notes 11 and 29 (29 was
more useful and included sample code).
