DJGPP: Much more than programming
---------------------------------

Please let me congratulate Eli and the developers of Web TeX on
another outstanding DJGPP port. As expected, Eli's installation
instructions were both clear and effective: TeX, LaTeX, and dvips seem
to be working fine with some test documents, including an Elisp manual
that produced a 6M PostScript file <grin>.

Over the past decade and more, as DJ and friends have continued in
their efforts to port GNU programs to 32-bit DOS and to develop
supporting DOS-based tools, the scope of the project has expanded from
DJGCC (DJ's version of GCC) to DJGPP (DJ's GNU Programming Platform).

Today, the releases of groff and TeX, as well as comprehensive ports of
the GNU file, text, and shell utilities, BASH, and the Emacs computing
enviroment, embrace a territory extending far beyond the bounds of
"programming" in any narrow sense.

For example, the groff and TeX packages permit typesetting and desktop
publishing of documents of various kinds, including but not limited to
programmer's documentation. The less utility enhances a DOS user's
access to manual pages and text files of all kinds. Emacs is, of
course, an ideal environment for programming with various compiled and
interpreted languages -- but is also great for writing articles like
this one <grin>.

A user with no special interest in C/C++/Objective-C might
nevertheless be very interested indeed in DJGPP as a DOS upgrade
package, a typesetting/publishing package, or a UNIX emulation
package.

This growth process during the single year that I've been a DJGPP user
is a truly impressive tribute to the people who make the project
possible.

Most appreciatively,
Margo Schulter
