Arg!  The version of sed supplied with Mike Arst's learn sed archive file
didn't support escape characters either.  Suppose f.s.f. decided to honor that
standard too.  Since this is a file format situation,
couldn't you use groff and tbl if needed to accomplish this level
of formatting and then use sed to strip out all the
roff directives in the files?
