Arg! The version of sed supplied with Mike Arst's learn sed archive file didn't support escape characters either. Suppose f.s.f. decided to honor that standard too. Since this is a file format situation, couldn't you use groff and tbl if needed to accomplish this level of formatting and then use sed to strip out all the roff directives in the files? //eoj jude <jdashiel AT eagle1 DOT eaglenet DOT com> Microsoft asks me where I want to go today but UNIX gets me there.
