Actually, Id already ported Quake over to win32. If you want to read
about it, they've been arguing about a related issue for quite some
time over in rec.games.programmer. If you want to check it out (It's
quite a long thread) it's the OpenGL vs Direct 3D debate. They used
OpenGL instead of DirectX3D for all the 3D stuff. Don't really know
what compiler they used, but since they already used Watcom for DOOM,
I'd imagine they used that for the Win32 version.

As I said, and despite what your tone suggests, I'm not slamming DJGPP
-- It's a very good DOS compiler. I never said that DJGPP compiled
programs can't run under win95. In fact most do quite well under
win95. The thing is that there's a fair bit of perceived demand for
native 32bit windows programs. For that though, you'd need to
actually port the code over to a compiler capable of building them,
and at the moment DJGPP can't. The only GNUish win32 native compiler
at the moment is RSXNT, which isn't really viable for a commercial
product (See GNU Copyleft policy for details).

I also never said that Using DJGPP as the initial development platform
wouldn't make it easier to port later on. Simply that _currently_ you
cannot viably port a commercial app over to win32 with DJGPP alone.
It's just not possible at the moment.

One can't advocate a single tool for every job. I'm not sure who
said it, but favorite quote of one of my professors was:

'When you only have a hammer, every job looks like a nail'
