Now, don't go too far on an assumption here. :) Nobody ever claimed
that DJGPP, or its documentation, was perfect; it can sometimes be
valuable to fiddle with things in the hopes of improving them. There
are plenty of known bugs in DJGPP and related software, and more waiting
to be discovered. Who knows? You might stumble on something that makes
things better for everyone. Don't be afraid to experiment, and don't be
afraid to post.
BUT... make sure to specify that what you're doing is an experiment, is
not recommended by the docs, may not work in all cases/operating
systems/states of mind, or whatever else you feel is necessary as a
precaution. As you found out, it's all too easy to confuse a newbie!

I have great respect for DJ, Eli, Charles, Robert, Shawn, Ilya, and all
the others who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of free
software. It is a great privilege to help out this effort, in whatever
way I can.
