Note that the above way of writing is *not* strict f77 (p. 8-8 of the
ANSI X3.9-1978 Standard).

so g77 is correct in this case and f77 - from which I usually 
expect more strictness - is a bit lax on this.

On the other hand g77 is more tolerant on statement ordering (positioning of
DATA statements) where f77 is very strict.
