Download gzip from the v2gnu directory of the distribution, then run:

gzip -d XXXXX.tar.gz

you'll get XXXXX.tar

Then use djtar -xvf XXXXX.tar and you'll get the directory structure unpacked.

There are several ways to do that, that's the one that give me the best 
results.
