     Yes I was informed by someone else, thankfully, that although it
is not mentioned in the Stacker manuals or tech hints, and although
CHKDSK does not ask you for a y/n answer, you CAN , in fact, answer NO
when CHKDSK recommends Scandisk, after which CHKDSK /F will go ahead
and do its job.  Obviously, Microsoft did not let CHKDSK offer you the
choice even if that choice is there.  

  However, my own workaround-- which is borrowing the CHKDSK program
from Novell Dos or Opendos, does the job without frustrating you and
without asking questions. I have the impression that Scandisk is
really  Novell's CHKDSK in drag, and with hostility to anything but
Microsoft thrown in.

    I thank those who replied and helped me out on the CHKDSK problem.
