The problem seems to occur when encountering a JOINed drive
and cds_paths has garbage in it, which is copied into drive_string.
Subsequently, when "look for the volume label" occurs,
an "*.*" is appended to the garbage
and then later that "*.*" is stripped off.
I do not really understand the goings on.
