  Oddly, I have just recently downloaded Allegro myself and created a small
program utilizing play_sample() more or less as described and it works just
fine. Also, running Windows-based sound utilities immediately prior and
afterward worked quite well with no problems.

  For my part I would like to thank Shawn Hargreaves for his fine efforts.
