There is a file README.dos there (it's an exact copy of the file
emacs.README that's available from the same place you got Emacs, and
that you should have read before installing). The other files are for
building and installing Emacs from the source distribution, so they
aren't useful for you.

The most probable causes of your problems are that either:

	(1) You unzipped the package with a program that doesn't
support long filenames. As a test case, look inside your `lisp'
subdirectory and see if there's a file there called `case-table.elc'.
If you see `case-tab.elc' or `case-t~1.elc', delete the entire Emacs
tree and unzip the files again with another program.

	(2) You set DJGPP environment variable to point to the
DJGPP.ENV file, and that file by default disables long filename
support. In that case, set LFN=y in the DOS box where you run Emacs
and try again.

Failing all of the above, try this:

	redir -o emacs.log -eo emacs -q

then post the contents of the file `emacs.log' (`redir' is from
djdev201.zip, in case you didn't install it). If you see in that file
that Emacs complains about `case-table', you indeed have problem with
the long filenames, and you should unzip the distribution again.

CONFIG.BAT is for configuring the Emacs *sources* before compiling
Emacs. That is not your case, so don't run it, it won't get you
anywhere.

Did you disable numeric tails *before* unzipping Emacs or *after* it?
If after, make sure they are disabled *before* you begin unzipping.
For Emacs to work in both DOS and Windows 95, you need that file
`lisp/case-table.elc' to have a short alias `lisp/case-tab.elc', not
`lisp/case-t~1.elc' or some such.

The above 5 are all you need to run Emacs. The rest are optional.
