Can you define a pattern or a regular expression that distinguishes 
between a function/variable *definition/declaration* and its *use*?  If 
so, you can run egrep or sed on the output of the first grep.

Btw, I still think that NM is your answer.  Can you tell why you couldn't 
make it help you?
